About the Society
The Tenterden and District Horticultural Society was born on the 9th. April 1942 as a result of the merging of The Tenterden Gardener’s Allotment Society and The Tenterden Gardener’s and Cottager’s Mutual Improvement Society. The latter was thought to have its roots as far back as 1793. The great need to provide adequate food production at a time of war is felt to be the driving force behind the merger. The newly formed Society had, at its first A.G.M. in 1943, 175 members and the subscriptions were 1 shilling (5np )
Today our numbers are 141 and the subscriptions are £6.00 for a single member and £11.00 for joint membership
The society’s year includes regular Members’ Meetings which may have guest speakers or the meeting may take the form of an outing with an horticultural theme. We do of course present flower shows in the spring, summer and autumn. Guests are welcome to any of the member’s meetings, outings and the shows. Our years activities end with The Annual Dinner followed some few days later by the A.G.M.
